Hello Arrow fans! Everything that is fun to watch about Arrow is encapsulated in Season One’s penultimate episode. What could have felt like another hour of set up, turned out to be a thrilling season finale part one. The episode’s climatic quality is the result of the entire cast having significant scenes, a death of an important character, the exciting caper in the Merlyn building and finally a rematch between the Hood & the Dark Archer.

Continue reading Arrow Season 1 Episode 22 titled Darkness On The Edge of Town review.

Before I discuss my reaction to the key scenes and major developments of the episode, I want to briefly touch on Oliver’s journey this season. Since returning from the island, Oliver is at the center of a tug-of-war over the lost parts of his humanity. In accessing his character progression, the question I ask is what can he do now, either personally or as the vigilante, which he couldn’t at the beginning of the season.

The first thing that comes to mind is how Oliver has opened himself up to his crime-fighting partners. The developing trust and bond between Oliver, Diggle and Felicity has been tested over the course of the season. The trio infiltrating Merlyn Global is a fun escapade. At the same time it’s an earned moment watching them work together. Oliver told Diggle last episode he couldn’t stop the The Undertaking alone; a point that is effectively illustrated through out Darkness.

After learning Diggle’s been right all along about Moira’s dishonesty, including her knowledge of Walter’s abduction, Oliver sets up a cunning trick interrogation which works as a plot device in more than one way. In the first interrogation in The Odyssey, Moira used her genuine love of her children to play on the emotions of the Hood/Oliver to buy enough time to grab a gun. This time, her family that she’s been protecting is put in jeopardy when Oliver takes a beating from Diggle in the guise of the Hood, motivating her to spill the beans about the Undertaking.

To change the dynamic between Oliver and Moira moving forward it’s important to have her secrets out in the open between the two without revealing that Oliver is the Hood. Now that Moira’s motivations are clear, Oliver can begin to trust her again. This break through opens up some possibilities on how Moira can be utilized next season when the Undertaking story arc, which has been central to her involvement in the show, wraps up next episode. Assuming she survives, I hope to see Moira and the family drama continue to play a role in the new season, which is more compelling than Oliver’s romantic life.

I’m not opposed to Oliver and Laurel reigniting their romance which has been brewing over the last few episodes, I just don’t feel now is the right time. The chemistry between the characters requires significant development to make their relationship convincing. Also, the dialogue requires improvement such as less explaining about what’s been keeping them apart and more engaging conversation or spark that’ll make viewers want to see them get together. As quickly as Oliver decided to get back with Laurel, I do want to see how it plays out in the season finale because I’m learning to expect the unexpected when it comes to these star-crossed lovers.

I’m curious what other fans think about Oliver’s belief that stopping the Undertaking would absolve his father’s sin; therefore, he could give up his secret life as the Hood and renew his relationship with Laurel. From my point of view, his feelings for Laurel are so strong that he impulsively believes in that fallacy in order to be with her, now that she’s unattached to Tommy. In Legacies, Diggle instilled in Oliver the notion that his mission is more than crossing off a list of names in his father’s book. I believe Oliver will quickly realize his purpose is the on-going fight for the greater good and giving up Laurel is a difficult sacrifice he will need to make. I would be surprised if there’s a mini story arc where Oliver hangs up the hood to be with Laurel at the beginning of Season 2.

The fight between Oliver and Malcolm builds my anticipation for the season finale. There’s a mixture of surprise, regret and genuine concern in the way Malcolm delivers “oh no” in discovering Oliver is the Hood. Malcolm has planned The Undertaking for years, tying up loose ends, but what he could not have predicted was the emergence of the vigilante and Oliver’s secret identity. Because Malcolm knows Oliver is the Hood, does that seal his fate in the finale?

Back on the island, I’m pretty shocked Yao Fei took a bullet to the head. It’s too bad my last memory of him is in that uniform, delivering that speech. Yao made the video confession to protect his daughter but I would have liked a more heroic sendoff. It does show Fyers to be utterly ruthless. So if Yao Fei is killed because he’s no longer of use to Fyers, what wicked purpose does he have in store for Oliver, Shado and Slade in the greater plan to destroy China’s economy? As one character exits, a new intriguing one is introduced; Fyer’s mysterious boss is a revealed, or least her shapely legs. Any predictions on her identity?

Other Quick Observations:

» From beginning to end, the caper inside the Merlyn’s headquarters is incredibly entertaining. I burst out laughing when Oliver knocks the papers out of the guys hand to get him off the elevator. I was thinking he was going to do a sleeper hold or something dramatic. Felicity has an adorable moment saying she’s always thought of Oliver telling to her to hold him.

» Is there anything the Surface tablet can’t hack? Detective Lance has discovered that Felicity has been trying to hack into Merlyn’s databases which should be interesting to watch how she gets out of that predicament.

» It’s amusing that while Roy idolizes the Hood, he thinks so little of Oliver. I’m guessing he’s going to find out they are one in the same in the season finale.

» I liked the reveal of the cave prisoner that Oliver left to die was actually working for Fyers.

» Peeping Tommy got an eyeful in Laurel’s window. Can’t help but feel for the guy after Oliver told him to go for Laurel and sees Oliver do the very thing he previously promised Tommy he wouldn’t.

What did you like or didn’t like about this episode? What do you think of Yao Fei’s death?

Hello Arrow fans. With only a couple of more episodes left in the season, “The Undertaking”, brought together several unresolved plot points which as a faithful viewer is fairly satisfying to watch. “The Undertaking” did not rely on any big surprises or last minute revelations rather the episode examined Malcolm’s ruthless plan to destroy the Glades from it’s inception 5 years ago and how it resulted in the sabotaged yacht that stranded Oliver on the island.

Continue reading Arrow Season 1 Episode 21 titled The Undertaking review.

For the most part the use of island flashbacks have been effective in chronicling an origin story that runs parallel to present day Starling City. In this episode, the flashbacks solely focused on off-island events and from perspectives other than Oliver. With a stable of compelling characters such as Shado, Slade and Diggle, the possibility of further flashbacks outside of Oliver’s point of view is promising for the next season.

The non-island flashbacks elaborated on several events at the core of the series so far and painted the motivations of several characters in a different light. Moira has had many shady meetings with Malcolm over the season but we learn in the flashbacks she’s neither a vengeful wife or a corrupt accomplice. Knowing that it was Frank who betrayed Robert Queen and planted the bomb on the yacht adds a new layer to Moira’s double cross on Frank in “Salvation”. At the docks, Moira was unaware her husband and Oliver were about to board an ill-fated yacht, which is a bit of twist having assumed she had a hand in their misfortune.

Meanwhile, the days leading up to the yacht expedition provided some new insight behind Oliver ditching his girlfriend for his girlfriend’s sister. Turns out that cheating on Laurel was an over reaction to the fear of taking his relationship to the next level. Oliver’s immaturity rather than his womanizing ways provoked him to implode his relationship with Laurel by inviting Sara on the trip. The younger versions of Oliver and Laurel are at ease with themselves which makes their relationship more believable than in the present day, where they are understandably guarded with their emotions.

As for Oliver’s crime fighting partner, the rift with Diggle was quickly resolved with an apology. It would have been interesting to see how dark Oliver might become without Diggle and see first hand why they need each other. On the flip side, it’s too late in the season to begin a mini character arc. Bringing back Diggle into the fold nicely sets up the season finale as does Oliver discovering Malcolm Merlyn is the mastermind pulling the strings.

With Diggle on the sidelines this episode, Felicity gets some quality time outside of the Arrow Cave. Since Felicity is a regular next season, its good to finally introduce her to Oliver’s family and to Laurel. I thought it was a lighter moment when Laurel saw Felicity come out of the Verdant basement. Laurel’s icy delivery of “Who is she?” made me humorously ponder if there’s going to be a future cat fight over Oliver. Meow!

One of the memorable moments in the casino scene is Felicity warning, “you don’t want to meet my partner”. When Alonzo, the casino guy, confesses Walter is dead it is hard to take it as face value, knowing the show usually leads viewers in one direction, then takes a different route. Some fans have commented that the rescue of Walter from the building is reminiscent of the movie Raid Redemption which was my initial thought as well. The rapid fire take downs in tight corridors is a great nod to movie as is the piles of badly beaten bodies.

Overall, the flashbacks in “The Undertaking” fleshed out and escalated the season’s main story arc to the point where it will be conclusively resolved one way or another in the final two episodes. What did you like or didn’t like about this episode? Anything that surprised you in the flashbacks?

Arrow is back after a 3 week break with an episode that had Laurel protecting a child from a hitman intent on killing all witnesses and Diggle facing off against his brother’s killer.

Since I’m a little rushed for time, this is going to be a quick recap and review. Continue reading Arrow Season 1 Episode 20 titled Home Invasion review.

Heading into this episode, other than the title, I didn’t know anything that was going to happen or the villain of the week. So it’s a pleasant surprise seeing Angel alum J. August Richards as a hitman aptly nicknamed Mr. Blank. Killing is his business and keeping his identity a secret is his M.O. Mr. Blank’s penchant for tying up loose ends led to a number of memorable scenes including the shootout in Laurel’s apartment (she really does need a new place with a bulletproof door & a new shotgun) and inducing an embolism in Rasmus’ heart by applying pressure on the wrist (very cool).

I liked Mr. Blank’s dead pan attitude towards killing and his as matter of fact remarks (“what a beautiful home” and “your going to die in about 15 seconds”.). The final showdown with Oliver is a nicely choreographed action sequence and the fireplace poker through the chest is a memorable finishing move. I would have liked Mr. Blank to live another day; however, we’ll be seeing more of Richards in Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. in a highly secretive role that reunites him with Avengers Director Joss Whedon.

While the story line with Mr. Blank was satisfying, I was a little disappointed with how the other assassin in the episode was handled. Understandably on a television shooting schedule there inevitably will be some shortcuts; however, the directing in the scene where ARGUS agents were baiting Deadshot lacked a sustainable suspense or urgency. Perhaps it was smart then to focus the camera on David Ramsey and let him carry the scene with his strong performance.

Aside from the reflective glare of the eye scope, it could have been more clear as to where exactly Deadshoot was shooting from. I guess a master assassin doesn’t give up his secrets easily. The confrontation between Diggle and Deadshot is something I’ve been anticipating since episode 16′s Dead To Rights. The fight in the stairwell was shot a bit too claustrophobic for my liking and I would have preferred an epic battle. (Have you seen the guns on Diggle? The man is a beast.)

I didn’t expect either of the two to die but the reason Deadshot gives for letting Diggle live felt kind of false to me. I could think of several simple solutions or reasons the fight could end with both alive without resorting to “nobody’s paying me to kill you” (even though I just killed four agents). This is just a minor issue I can overlook because of course, it’s not like I want Diggle to die. It does bring up the question, who hired Deadshot to kill Diggle’s brother and why?

Directly or indirectly, the events that played out in this episode are a result of Oliver’s devotion to Laurel. Diggle has always been very astute as to pinpointing Oliver’s underlying motivation. There is truth behind Diggle’s accusations of Ollie choosing Laurel, “everybody else be damned”. How the wedge in their partnership will unfold will be interesting to watch and perhaps opens the door for a new sidekick (Roy Harper) waiting in the wings. In the flashbacks, we see that Oliver’s feelings for Laurel is preventing him from developing an intimate relationship with Shado. I do have to say, the romantic chemistry between Ollie and Shado is heating up pretty nicely especially since I didn’t see any of it in previous episodes.

Back in present day, at the center of Tommy and Laurel’s relationship break up is Oliver. This episode did a good job of depicting Tommy’s insecurities and showing why he feels inferior to Oliver. Although it’s The Hood/Oliver who protects and saves Laurel more than once this episode, a fact all too clear for Tommy, he does sell himself a little short. It’s a great character moment when Tommy helps the 7 year old boy deal with the death of his parents. So its sad that as good hearted as Tommy is, he believes he can’t compare with Oliver if Laurel knew the truth.

Overall, Home Invasion is another fun, action-packed episode which pushed a couple of relationships over the brink. Though the Deadshot scenes could have been directed better, it did not take away from my enjoyment of the episode. What did you like or didn’t like about this episode? What did you think of Tommy dumping Laurel?

Game Of Thrones: Season 3 Episode 3 “Walk Of Punishment” Review – Hand Of The Kingslayer! (Note: This review is suitable for fans that only follow the TV show; no books spoilers.)

With the narrative stretching out further across the continents, down the family tree, interweaving strands of history with the present day, it’s no small feat how the weight of its ambition doesn’t collapse upon itself. A sign of intricate storytelling is how dangling threads start to fold back in, forming the infrastructure from which more offshoots can thrive.

There are a couple of developments in Walk Of Punishment that are fine examples of plot points planted long ago that are beginning to take shape. The Hound is on Arya’s nightly death wish list because he slaughtered her friend Mycah, the butcher’s boy she was sword-fighting with back in Season 1, Episode 2.

As fate would have it, the Inn at the crossroads is where Arya confronts The Hound about what happened there last time. Because Arya obviously can’t defeat The Hound in a fight and used up the three kills granted by the faceless man, she’ll have to find another way for a chance at vengeance. Sadly, Arya loses another friend at the Inn but at least Hot Pie is alive unlike Mycah. Besides, Hot Pie is doing what he loves the most … baking, make that eating!

Up north, Samwell makes good on his promise to return to Gilly, Craster’s daughter/wife. Although Sam has yet to find his courage, he’s oddly endearing and affable. Sam has become more than a wingman for Jon. He has his own motivations and story. As we learned in Season 2, Episode 2, Craster gives his baby boys to the White Walkers. So without Jon to depend on, it’s up to Sam alone to help Gilly who is horrified that her newborn baby is a boy.

In Season 2, despite some story lines that took its time to find its footing, the build up to the impending Stannis invasion on King’s Landing gave the season its bearings. So far in Season 3, there are a couple of characters that appear to have a clear destination. Most of Jon’s brief scenes revolve around introducing new Wildlings characters for him to interact with. This means Ygritte’s fiery flirtation is put on the back burner. Hopefully things will heat up as Jon leads the Wildlings to the Wall.

Meanwhile, Dany is determined to purchase The Unsullied army in exchange for her biggest dragon. However, she didn’t make her decision to acquire the army until she comes upon a tortured slave dying on the Walk Of Punishment. It’s evident that Dany is compassionate and strongly believes in abolishing slavery, especially having been sold into marriage herself.

She needs the 8000 soldiers to conquer cities but she’s very specific that she gets all the slaves. It’s very likely the underlying reason Dany also wants all the soldiers in-training is because she’s doesn’t want them to suffer more cruelty and grow up to kill babies, the final task to becoming an Unsullied.

As well, Dany barters for Missandei, the smart interpreter girl, freeing her from the slaver. She asks if Missandei has a family (to go back to) and her thoughts about joining a perilous journey implying that their relationship is not as typical master and slave. When Dany understands Missandei’s reply “Valar Morghulis”, and reveals what the slave on the Walk Of Punishment said, it confirms she knows the valyrian language. Therefore, telling Missandei there will be no more lying means Dany understands the insults the slaver was saying all along.

While Dany is attaining an army and Jon is on his way back to the Wall with the Wildlings, Robb’s story line may not appear to have a particular destination (other than war versus Tywin), though many of the pieces are in plain sight. The North has captured Martyn Lannister but the boy is of little value compared to their previous prized prisoner Jamie. The wolf in Robb is in full force: he’s fierce and ready for battle. Unlike her eldest son, Catelyn is resigned to the likelihood that Bran and Rickon are dead.

The introduction of Robb’s inept Uncle Edmure Tully missing the funeral boat is in contrast to Blackfish Tully, a formidable man to be reckoned with and a helluva archer. We instantly understand these new characters without any dialogue in their introductory scene.

Another scene with little dialogue is Tyrion in the small council chambers. The squeaky chair-moving works both in terms of the humor and the overtone of power politics at play with Tyrion sitting directly opposite his father. Moments of levity work so well on this show, especially in an episode a filled with death, attempted rape, and maiming (more on that later). Although it’s not pivotal to the plot, the new Master Of Coin repays Podrick for saving his life in a delightfully salacious scene at Littlefinger’s whorehouse. Who else wants to hear the conversation with Pod, Bronn and Tyrion on why the whores didn’t accept payment?

Lastly to the big wow moment of the episode. Jamie is known to make snap decisions without any regard to anybody but himself; he pushed Bran out the window and strangled his cousin. Possibly, he would have killed Brienne last episode in the sword duel if he wasn’t handcuffed.

Saving Brienne from rape was a selfless act of compassion. Her screaming is more unsettling off camera than if shown on screen. Jamie is used to getting his way. He belongs to the richest family in the kingdoms and if there’s a problem, Daddy is there to bail him out.

So what comes next is shocking! Jamie is known throughout Westeros as a gifted swordsmen, it’s a huge part of his identity. In fact, Brienne made a point earlier in the episode about how she bested the Kingslayer in a sword duel. With his sword hand hacked off, his identity is obliterated. As stated by the producers in the video below, “it’s like killing a person, yet leaving him alive and walking.”

“Walk Of Punishment” Side Notes

• Tarth is called the Isle of Sapphires for the clear blue waters surrounding the island. There are no actual sapphires. [source]

• Astapor’s Harpy Statue as seen in the opening credits and in this episode is a woman’s torso, wings of a bat instead of arms, legs of an eagle and a scorpion’s tail. In its talons hangs a chain with open manacles at either end. [source]

• Actor Daniel Portman’s (Podrick Payne) father is Ron Donachie who played Ser Rodrick Cassel (the man who had his head chopped off by Theon) [source]

• The Brotherhood Without Banners is heard singing The Bear and The Maiden Fair, a song which describes in a humorous tone the story of a hairy bear that, while going to a fair with a band of three boys and a goat, rescues a maiden who was hoping for a knight. [source]

• After Jamie’s hand is cut off, the end credit song is an electric rendition of The Bear and The Maiden Fair by the rock band The Hold Steady. The lyrics are by George R.R. Martin.

• The clue to the identity of the mysterious man who rescued Theon is indicated when the would-be rapist says “You Bastard”. The term bastard refers to anyone born out-of-wedlock in the seven kingdoms.

• Meereenese Knot as referenced in the whorehouse scene is an inside joke. It’s originally a term coined by George R.R. Martin about unraveling a tricky sequence of events.

Dialogue To Die For

• Hot Pie to Arya: “My brother is no king. I’m not Stark of Winterhell.”

• Jorah to Dany: “There’s a beast in every man and it stirs when you put a sword in his hand.”

• Tyrion: “Any advice for me on my new position?”
Littlefinger: “Keep a low profile.”
Tyrion: “If I had a gold dragon for every time I heard that joke, I’d be richer than you are.”
Littlefinger: “You are richer than I am.”

• Missandei: “Valar Morghulis.” Dany: “Yes, All men must die. But we are not men.”

What are your favorite scenes in this episode? Which part made you laugh the most?

Spartacus: War Of The Damned Series Finale “Victory” Recap – “I Am Spartacus!”

Spoiler Alert: This article is a recap and reaction to Season 3, Episode 10, Series Finale titled “Victory”.

What a glorious ending! The finale is as close to a flawless Victory as I could have hoped for. Every emotional beat and combat sequence is carefully thought out and perfectly executed. There’s never a moment that felt false or was not rightly earned which is in accomplishment in itself considering the level of expectation in terms of the fate of characters and giving fans a gratifying conclusion. (Warning: Continue reading only if you have watched Victory).

Now that I’ve finished crying like a little baby I’ll gather my thoughts and reaction to the finale. The part that affected me the most is Agron’s weeping face as Spartacus spoke his dying words, “Do not shed a tear. There is no greater victory than to fall from this world a free man.” I’m surprised by how touched I am because I’m usually not very sentimental. This show became more than about gladiators hacking and slashing. It’s a testament to the writers and actors for developing characters that I can emotionally invest in.

The flashes to Sura and other lost ones are beautifully done. Though Spartacus’ initial motivation is to avenge the death of Sura, he is ultimately fighting for something more. His conversation with Gannicus this episode is a call back to the season premiere. However this time, Gannicus is not drunk and Spartacus who once proclaimed, “A thousand lives will not equal Sura’s”, now defines victory differently. “Life is what defines it. Not the death of Romans, nor ours, nor those that follow us into battle. But the life of Sibyl, or Laeta. The mother and her child and so many others. They are all Sura and I would see them live.”

For a finale filled with impending doom and death, there’s a silver lining of hope that I’m left with. “Spartacus is not my [real] name. I should finally hear it again given voice by loving wife.” The prospect of reuniting with Sura in the afterlife may add to the feeling of hope, but it’s the notion that Spartacus is not one man, rather an enduring ideology which is an uplifting message. Agron said it best, “One day Rome will fade and crumble, yet you shall always be remembered in the hearts of all that yearn for freedom.”

As the “Bringer of Rain” passed away, the clouds covered up the sun and rain started to fall. On most other television series this would have been corny, but within the context of Spartacus it fit the show’s unique visual style and added to the emotional impact.

The entire death scene is executed better than I could have imagined. In a way, there are two Spartacus death scenes in the finale. I’m glad he was carried off the hill to have a final moment amongst his companions and it explains why historically his body was never found on the battlefield. The final image of the red serpent shield placed over the grave is a reference to Sura’s prophetic dream in the pilot episode which brought things full circle.

It’s a nice touch that the shield Nasir crafted out of genuine affection for Agron serves as Spartacus’ gravestone. Spartacus knew in his heart there would be no happily ever after for him because nothing could ever replace the love of his wife. He went into the final battle to give the other rebels a chance to live a life of freedom. Agron as the only surviving member from the Batiatus ludus represents the legacy will live on. The show began with two lovers (Spartacus & Sura) torn apart and many relationships such as Lucretia & Batiatus and Crixus & Naevia formed the foundation of the series, so it’s fitting that at least one couple survived as a result of Spartacus’ heroic crusade.

One hero that some viewers thought had a good chance to survive as any is Gannicus. In the first of several moments that played with my expectations, when Gannicus said, “I Am Spartacus” I thought it may hint at a possible way out for Spartacus to live on. Instead, it’s a great homage to the Stanley Kubrick film and a ploy to evade Pompeii.

Watching Gannicus on horseback as he attacked the Roman army from behind is in one of the many thrilling moments in an incredible, epic battle. Because fan-favorite Gannicus is a free loving spirit and finally accepted a leadership role in a rebellion he grew to believe in, it is difficult to see him on the cross.

Since historically Gannicus died in an earlier battle and Crassus crucified all the captured rebels, the show understandably didn’t want to cheat his death. What could have been a depressing, dismal scene was allayed with the vision of old friend Oenomaus and the crowd in the arena cheering for our champion. Although Gannicus did not die in battle as some think he deserved, I thought the visions respectfully honored his character.

The finale did a solid job of wrapping up Crassus’ twisted love story with Kore who was crucified along side Gannicus. After half a season of Crassus not knowing Tiberius raped Kore, everything finally comes to a head. As much as I like Crassus as Spartacus’ ultimate adversary, I was not as invested in this season’s Roman story line as much as Lucretia and Ilithyia’s scheming in Vengeance.

Crassus may have won the battle, but he suffered a significant loss in learning of his deceased son’s true nature whom he describes is as a reflection of himself and in watching his lover upon the cross. He forgave Kore but perhaps his love for her is only outmatched by his single-minded pursuit to glorify Rome. Crassus is always thinking of ways to manipulate future events to his advantage which is why he lets Pompeii steal some of the credit. And since the past is set in stone, he never questions why Kore left to join the rebels until Spartacus inadvertently reveals the truth about Tiberius’ death.

As adversaries throughout the season, it is easy to forget that the two never spoke face to face with each other until the finale. The hilltop conversation highlighted the dichotomy between Spartacus and Crassus though they do share the belief that there is no justice in this world. The next time they meet is on the battlefield. When Spartacus jumps up to strike Crassus sitting on his horse, it is reminiscent of the leap up to the balcony in season one finale, Kill Them All. Awesome!

One of my favorite images is an enraged Spartacus running up the hill in slow motion attacking all of Crassus’ body guards. As the final fight unfolded, I did think for a moment that Crassus’ sword reversal move would be the end of Spartacus as it was set up in the season premiere. I’m glad that Spartacus was not defeated in an one on one fight versus Crassus, only the cowardly soldiers that attacked from behind could defeat a titan. Finally, I would be remiss if I didn’t mention what a fantastic performance by Liam McIntyre in this finale and through-out the season.

If for some reason you normally skip the end credits, go back and watch this one. A montage of all the significant characters from the first to final season are featured. The very last image is Andy Whitfield screaming “I Am Spartacus” taken from Season 1 Episode 7. What better way to end an amazing series and pay tribute to an incredible actor. If you interested in finding out how you can contribute to a documentary on Andy Whitfield’s life be sure to check out Be Here Now website.

I believe appreciation for Starz Spartacus will grow as fans continue to recommend it to a new audience. Word of mouth led to me watch some of my other favorite television series. So let your family and friends who have an open mind know about the greatness of Spartacus and maybe one day they might say “Gratitude” … or “Jupiter’s Cock!” Shall we begin?

There are many more memorable moments and characters’ fate in the finale that I could easily write another thousand words on. Lugo’s flaming war hammer for starters. Please feel free to share your thoughts, add anything else I missed and I’d be glad to discuss them with you.

HBO’s Game Of Thrones 301 & 302 Discussion

Since Game Of Thrones debuted on HBO, it has captured my imagination unlike any other show or movie franchise. After an episode is over, the medieval fantasy world of Game Of Thrones is still on my mind. I’m completely invested in the journey of characters such as Tyrion, Arya and Jon Snow. And who wouldn’t want their own direwolf or dragon?

I absolutely enjoy discussing other shows I cover on this blog with fellow fans and I hope to do the same with Game Of Thrones. Whether you are a game of thrones veteran or rookie, feel free to share your perspective, insight or questions in the comment section.

Because the show has so many characters and locations it would be overwhelming for me to recap every story beat. Instead, I plan on breaking down each post into a few different short sections:

Open Discussion

• Who are your favorite characters and why are they compelling?

Game Of Thrones is more than about people scheming for power. I connect the most with characters who are either marginalized in Westeros society or try to define their own identity and value system. For example, Dany strongly believes in abolishing slavery however she will need to compromise her principles to attain an army of eunuch slaves soldiers.

As for Jon, since joining the Wildlings he is no longer bound by oath to the Night’s Watch or obliged to bend the knee to any King. He’s free to follow his own beliefs and it’s not as simple as choosing which side he’s on.

While Jon does not carry the Stark name and is not entitled to any inheritance because he’s a bastard, Tyrion’s birthright is denied to him by his father. Tyrion wants gratitude for saving King’s Landing but also recognition from his father that’s he is Twyin’s son, a Lannister, which is what inheriting Casterly Rock means to him. Tywin’s scathing attack on Tyrion pinpoints everything we need to know about their relationship. Tyrion always has a clever retort but all he can do is walk away, crushed and defeated. It’s also my favorite moment from “Valar Dohaeris“. The scene with Shae in Episode 2 feels a bit tacked on however we’ve haven’t seen him this vulnerable before.

In every scene with Brienne, someone is always telling her how she’s like a man (or Jamie’s jest that she’s too much man for Renly). She refuses to be bound by other people’s definition of gender. Wouldn’t she be a great role model for Arya? Even in manacles, Jamie is a deadly swordsmen so it’s no small feat for Brienne to get the upper hand in their duel.

• Do Jorah and Cersei feel they are replaceable?

In two separate scenes featuring Jorah and Cersei they both face situations that are not dissimilar. Cersei as Queen Regent is arguably the most powerful women in the seven kingdoms but her status is at stake because Margaery will be The Queen after her marriage to Joffrey. Cersei’s is well aware her power and youth are fleeting. Additionally, she has to choose her words carefully when speaking to her son whom she can no longer control while Margaery has Joffrey wrapped around her finger. As for Jorah, his status (as Dany’s trusted advisor) is similarly threatened with the arrival of a newcomer, Ser Barristan Selmy – the greatest knight in Westeros with a history of serving the Targaryen’s.

• How would you grade Margaery’s game play so far?

Margaery is playing the game hard. She can appear sweet but we as recall from Season 2, she used all of her womanly charms in an attempt to bed Kingly Renly. It’s one thing to be crowned Queen but Margaery’s plan is to win the hearts of the common people and shape her public persona with charity work. Varys has his little birds while Margaery gets the word on the street directly from the very people that rioted against Joffrey. Sansa told her and the Queen of Thorns that Joffrey is a monster. Realizing that Joffrey gets off on killing things, she plays on his sadism and ego. Gently stroking the cross-bow on Joffrey’s lap summed up my favorite scene from Dark Wings, Dark Words. A+

• Who are your favorite duos in Season 3 so far?

In season 2, every scene featuring Tyrion & Cersei and Arya & Twyin were the highlights of the episode for me. In Dark Wings, Dark Words, Jamie Lannister badgering Brienne is too funny! Plus, I’m looking forward to how Arya vs The Hound will play out. And of course, Jojen and Meera Reed can help Bran with his warging and visions.

Other Tidbits

• Valar Morghulis, the episode title of the season 2 finale, translates to all men must die in High Valyrian. It is a customary saying in Essos, and is traditionally answered with “Valar Dohaeris” which means all men must serve.“[source]

• In the opening credit sequence Winterfell is smoldering since it was burnt in the Season 2 finale. Only actors that appear in the episode are credited. Their house sigil is displayed beside their name. The slave city of Astapor is a new addition to the map replacing Qarth.

• In the audio commentary for the Season 2 finale, director Alan Taylor confirmed that the White Walker looked directly at Sam but kept riding because Sam was trivial.

• Dragons do not eat raw meat which is why the fish was scorched before it was swallowed.

• Lord Kastark is a notable bannerman of the Starks. His sons were killed by Jamie Lannister.

• The man who was aided by Talisa and Robb is named Qyburn.

• Game Of Thrones has not done any flashbacks yet. However, Bran’s dream sequence/vision of the past featuring Jon and Robb was a callback to the pilot episode. It’s great to see the Starks together. Ned’s Stark presence was felt throughout Dark Wing, Dark Words. Literally, as a voice in the trees and Tyrion’s line, “We’ve come to a dangerous place”. Tyrion previously said that to Shae before as did Ned to Arya. Then there was Catelyn’s monologue about Ned bringing home baby Jon.

Dialogue To Die For

• Jon: “When I’m free, will I be free to go?.” Ygritte: “Sure you will, then I’ll be free to kill you.”

• Tyrion to Cersei: “Grand Maester Pycelle made the same joke. You must be proud to be as funny as a man whose balls brush his knees.”

• Cersei: “You’re a clever man, but you’re not half as clever as you think you are.” Tyrion: “Still makes me more clever than you.”

• Tyrion: “I don’t even know how much I’m paying you now.” Bronn: “Which means you can afford it.”

• Missandei to Daenerys: “My master points out that men don’t need nipples.”

• Tywin to Tyrion: “You are an ill-made, spiteful little creature, full of envy, lust, and low cunning.”

• Jamie on Renly: “It’s a shame the throne isn’t made out of c*cks, they would never have gotten him off it.”

• Jamie to Brienne: “He preferred curly haired little girls like Loras Tyrell. You’re far too much man for him.”

What are your favorite scenes in the first two episodes of Season 3? Which story line are you most invested in? What is your favorite line?

Spartacus: War Of The Damned “The Dead And The Dying” Recap – Gladiator Battles Are Back!

Spoiler Alert: This article is a recap and impressions of Season 3, Episode 9, titled “The Dead And The Dying”.

This season’s subtitle “War Of The Damned” is under no disillusionment as to the rebellion’s fate, forever etched in history. One aspect the final season has excelled at is in crafting triumphant moments for Spartacus and company which counter balance the despair in watching characters, many of whom viewers are are deeply invested in, fall in battle.

The death of Crixus last episode was a crushing blow to the rebels and long-time fans alike. In its wake, “The Dead and The Dying” delivered a largely satisfying tribute to the undefeated Gaul (at least in the arena) with chants of “Crixus, Crixus” by the surviving rebels in the final scene. The gladiator games served as a tribute to the fallen, as a rallying cry for the rebels and to a certain extent a callback to the origins of the series.

Some of the best fighting moments in the series were in the arena. It was very rewarding to see former gladiators Spartacus and Gannicus upon the sands for the very last time, utterly destroying their opponents. Or should I say, toying with them? After putting away his swords in the sand, there’s a brutal kill where Spartacus slams a Roman’s neck onto the blades. And the double swords piercing through the eyes from the back of the skull … Nasty! After last episode’s gut punch, these scenes offered fans an empowering moment which is unlikely to be afforded to this extent in the series finale.

For Naevia, the games is her opportunity for the ultimate revenge on Tiberius, the vile little rapist who speared Crixus (and Caesar) from behind. Naevia’s character arc came to fruition this episode by embodying the idea that only by choosing a higher principle can one break the cycle of vengeance. Consumed by rage and revenge through out this season, it shows how far she has come by sparing Tiberius’ life in exchange for five hundred rebels. What also added to the effectiveness of this scene is that it was her decision alone to make, not Spartacus’, and that it didn’t repeat her vengeance-fueled beheading of Ashur in last season’s finale.

Since Naevia didn’t get to kill Tiberius, I’m glad Kore got to be the one who did. Of all the villains over the seasons, Tiberius’ death is the least satisfying. Most characters get a more memorable exit and we’ve even seen some who have survived through similar stabbings such as Lucretia. However, the lead up to his capture was nicely executed thanks to Caesar knowingly sending him into an ambush. Further, there’s some great camera and stunt work when Spartacus pulls Tiberius off the fleeing horse and slams him to the ground.

For a historical figure not recorded as taking part in the Third Servile War, the writers have done a solid job at incorporating Julius Caesar as a pivotal character in this season. Some of the situations Caesar finds himself in, loosely explain why he’s not accounted for such as disguising himself as slave to infiltrate the rebel camp and unable to mount a horse along with other high ranking officials in the final battle against Crixus. Of course, this show takes a creative license with history in the name of entertainment. I would love to see a spin off featuring Caesar but in War of the Damned he’s difficult to root for because he’s in opposition to the rebel’s cause.

So when Caesar nails fan favorite Agron to the cross it does little to endear him, rather it’s upsetting: one moment Agron is seemingly resurrected (yeah!) only to see him crucified moments later (bummer!). One scene I would have liked added is Nasir’s reaction to Naevia about missing Agron. This could have been a great sentimental moment for Nasir and actor Pana Hema Taylor which has been earned over the last two seasons. Plus, it would have added to the emotional payoff when Agron returned. Having said that, I had a huge lump in my throat when the two were reunited. I hope both survive the finale but as we all know from previous seasons there will be death and lots of it.

Despite the inevitable fate of characters we have watched over the years, the challenge with the series finale is to leave fans with a positive feeling that the journey they have invested in is meaningful. In an interview posted January 2013, creator Steven DeKnight stated, “The last episode is called “Victory,” and it’s a bit of an ironic title because it really explores how the rebels gained victory in defeat, and how the Romans suffered defeat in victory. No one comes out of this clean, at the end. In true Spartacus fashion, it’s all very grey. But, there is a powerful, uplifting message. I wrote the finale, watched all of the dailies and saw cuts, but still, at the end of the day, when I watched it, I cried. It was so powerful. So, I can only imagine what the audience is going to feel.”

On a side note, I would like to sincerely thank everyone who reads this blog. Some of you may have wondered what happened to the other Spartacus reviews and some have requested more reviews on the contact form. I promise to do a complete review of the series finale “Victory” and if times permits I might go back and write blogs on the other episodes.

Odds & Ends

• Naevia’s expression as the captured rebels returned reaffirmed she made the right decision to put aside her vendetta. She forever lost the love of her life but knowing that she reunited Nasir and Agron gives her peace of mind.

• How poetic would it have been if Marcus Crassus freed the person (ie Naevia) that ended up killing his son? But it was a great character moment for Naevia to spare Tiberius’ life so I wouldn’t change how it happened.

• I thought Kore joining the rebel camp would factor into a significant tactic to be used against Crassus, not that killing Tiberius is uneventful. With Tiberius dead, she returns to Crassus who warmly greets her then tells her to address him as “Dominus”. A lot of time this season was invested in their relationship and how Crassus didn’t view her as a slave. I hope their relationship gets a satisfying conclusion in the finale.

So what did you think of this episode? Should Gannicus end up with Sibyl or Saxa, assuming any of them live? What are your expectations for the series finale?

One of the most polarizing villains on Arrow makes his reappearance this week. After episode 12′s Vertigo, many fans voiced their objection to Seth Gabel’s take on the psychotic drug dealer The Count. In anticipation to Unfinished Business I was curious if the producers would re-envision The Count to appease dissenting fans or embrace what some have described as a Walmart version of Heath Ledger’s Joker.

Continue reading Arrow Season 1 Episode 19 titled Unfinished Business recap.

The twist and turns of the episode played with my expectations on which version of The Count would emerge. At first, seeing The Count in the mental hospital as a man who has lost touch with reality, uttering bizarre phrases made sense since Oliver pumped him with a near lethal dose of Vertigo in episode 12. But after his reported escape, it appeared he faked his insanity, indicating the writer’s plan to dial back The Count’s craziness.

In the end though, the return of The Count that the previews teased was a clever bait and switch. Aside from the overt framing of the male orderly (aka henchman) in the foreground as The Hood sneaked past the mental institute’s windows in the background, the story did a good job at not tipping their hand at the surprise reveal that The Count’s doctor is the manufacturer of the new Vertigo.

The doctor’s scheme to profit from Vertigo acted as a catalyst for much more interesting developments with our primary characters. Oliver, who is short-tempered and brisk with his friends this episode, had the opportunity to finish off The Count but instead spared the mad man’s life.

In the context of a crime-fighting television drama, I’ve never had an issue with Oliver killing dangerous criminals or in self-defense. But it’s another matter if Oliver kills in cold blood those that do not pose a danger to him. Oliver’s moral code is an ever changing work-in-progress; could his decision to spare The Count move him one step closer to adopting a no-kill policy in the future even if villains will inevitably come back to haunt him?

Likewise, Oliver’s childhood friend Tommy also stands on the precipice of a sea change, as the final scene embracing his Dad (aka Dark Archer) may foreshadow. However, at this point Tommy has not demonstrated much in the way of turning to the dark side. If anything, quitting the night club is Tommy’s reaction to what Oliver has become, for what he is turning into for protecting the identity of the hood (a criminal for bribing the building inspector) and Ollie’s unspoken accusation of dealing Vertigo. Tommy is for the most part a morally grounded character and valued friend for disguising the Arrow Cave from Det. Lance. He still has a ways to go before turning into a villain, if that’s the direction he’s headed.

Unfinished Business greatly benefited from cohesive storytelling where each story thread did not feel extraneous unlike the Lance family drama of previous episodes. Diggle’s personal vendetta to track down Deadshot naturally integrated with the main story line and having him aid Oliver at the very end made me realize, other than as a sounding board, how under used he has been of late. The scenes featuring Shado had more substance than recent flashbacks. At first, I thought the water slapping would somehow come in handy in the present day but it was very cool to see how it helped Oliver learn to use the bow, a memorable step to becoming the Archer aka Green Arrow.

Overall, Unfinished Business is pretty fun and entertaining which makes make me excited for the final run of Season 1 episodes. What did you like or didn’t like about this episode? What did you think of Tommy’s development and where are the island flashbacks headed?

In The Walking Dead Season 3 Finale, Episode 16 titled “Welcome To The Tombs”, the Governor attacks the prison and goes crazy!

Let’s dissect the episode! Continue reading for my initial reaction and spoiler filled thoughts.

You Kill Or You Die

When the finale is as highly anticipated as this, especially after a great penultimate episode, it would be difficult to meet expectations. There were some memorable moments but I wouldn’t go as far as to say this was the best episode of the season.

Andrea is not compelling or likeable enough make her death the emotional centerpiece of a season finale. It’s one thing to see her outsmart the Governor in “Prey” but having her tied to a chair for the entire episode just made me feel relieved it was over and that she got a decent farewell. More on her death later in the recap.

“You kill or you die … Or you die and you kill” is the narrative thread through-out the Season 3 finale as we see multiple characters, including Milton and Carl, decide whether or not to abide by this code.

Milton gets a final moment to define his character by attempting to kill the Governor instead of Andrea. The more Milton stands up against the Governor over the last few episodes the more I have slowly warmed up to him.

There’s a good moment when the Governor’s acknowledges to Milton that Penny would be afraid of him. One way to look at it is he’s transforming himself into the man who could have saved his daughter as horrific as that may be.

Resurrection Of Damnation

The prison assault did not unfold as I expected but it was still exciting to watch. If Rick’s group went to toe-to-toe with the Governor’s firepower they would have been blown to smithereens along with the watchtowers.

I assume leaving the bible with the highlighted scripture for the Governor was intentional and a nice touch … compliments of Hershel?

The OMG moment of the episode that I did not see coming is the Governor massacring the Woodbury people. If they only knew who the Governor really is they probably wouldn’t have mouthed off.

Stupid Allen, if you’re going to point your gun at the Governor you better pull the trigger before he does. I wish we got a hint at what the Governor’s next plan of action is if only to leave me anticipating his return next season.

Sheriff’s Badge

Has Carl gone crazy or is it just zombie apocalypse logic? It is troubling that a child can kill without remorse. As much as Carl is emotionally hardened, my impression is when he put a bullet in the boy it wasn’t a sociopathic urge to kill like the Governor. Having said that, killers typically have an explanation in their warped minds for their criminal behaviors.

Throwing away the sheriff’s badge is an act of defiance against Rick. It also puts into question whether the accepted moral values before the zombie outbreak are still applicable.

As a counterpoint to the Governor’s motto of “You Kill or You Die”, Rick’s intention to assault Woodbury resulted in him bringing back children, women and seniors to care for. I liked the dichotomy between the Governor’s belief that being alive means you’ve won (in his talk with Milton) and slaughtering his followers while Rick chooses a community, “They’re gonna join us.”

Daryl’s brief line about needing people to survive hits home a lot of what this season is about. On a side note, I would have liked to have seen more Daryl in this episode, perhaps a conversation with Carol about Merle’ death would have been nice.

In Season 4, Rick’s arc is to become the father/authority figure that Carl needs; acting as a moral compass and bringing his son back from a very slippery slope. Rick has come to terms with his past traumas and understands what he needs to do moving forward so he no longer needs visions of Lori to help him.

Goodbye or Good Riddance?

The Andrea scenes lacked the urgency to be an effective climax to the season finale. From the moment Milton told her about the pliers she should have hurriedly scrambled to escape. I felt more for Milton than for Andrea through-out these scenes. “You need to hurry.”

The longer the torture room scenes dragged on and as it became apparent everyone from the prison group would survive, the probability of Andrea dying markedly increased.

Actress Danai Gurira’s facial expression as she watched her friend’s dying moments was more emotional than Andrea herself. It makes me curious about what happened during the past winter that cemented their friendship.

It made sense that Andrea wanted to kill herself before she turned into a walker. After Dale saved her from committing suicide in the Season 1 finale, she had to regain her will to live and eventually became a battle tested survivor. Going out on her own terms, by her own hands, says a lot about her character and how far she came yet kind of full circle. She accepted her mortality in a very different way from Season 1. My kill of the week is Andrea shooting herself in the head, which happened off-screen.

Had Andrea killed the Governor when she had the chance, she would still be alive proving that the code ensures survival albeit morally grey in some situations.

Did the season finale deliver what you wanted? How do you feel about the death of Andrea and Milton? Why did the Governor snap and where did he go? What do you want to happen in Season 4, which premieres in October?

In Arrow Season 1 Episode 18 titled Salvation, a new vigilante inspired by the Hood, broadcasts online killings of criminals that have wronged The Glades.

Oliver’s character arc through out season one is the gradual process of regaining parts of the humanity he lost while on the island of Purgatory. Since returning to Starling City, Oliver opened himself up in his relationships to Helena Bertinelli and McKenna Hall, only to have the door slammed in his face. Fresh off McKenna’s abrupt break up, Oliver is a little colder, reverting back to an emotionally isolated man driven to rid the city of criminals.

This week’s nemesis nicknamed The Savior, served as a fractured mirror image of the Hood’s vigilantism, forcing Oliver to reexamine his actions and where his current path will lead if he doesn’t change course. Though the Savior doesn’t appear on-screen until the final scene, the lack of the villain’s depth didn’t hurt the episode because he’s only a device for Oliver to realize the importance of a close circle of friends and family.

To tie in the B-plot with the main story line, it was fairly evident that the Savior’s final victim would be someone connected to Oliver. Fortunately, Laurel was passed over as a damsel in distress and since she’s neither corrupt or a criminal she wouldn’t fit the profile of the Savior’s victims.

Instead the petty thief Roy Harper became the target which led to a revealing character moment. Beneath Roy’s self-reliant and suave demeanor is a young man who doesn’t believe his life is of any worth; yelling at the Savior to kill him because no one would care as Thea watches online.

The one oversight after this climatic moment is there is no acknowledgement or exchange of words between Roy and his rescuer, the Hood. However, Oliver as Roy’s personal savior is a fitting introduction to what should eventually evolve into an enduring partnership. It would be interesting if in future episodes, Roy makes the most of his second chance and obsesses over the mysterious vigilante that saved him, perhaps igniting his crime-fighting origins.

Mirroring Roy’s emotional breakdown this episode is Dinah Lance (Alex Kingston) who blames herself for letting Sara go on the ill-fated yacht. Laurel has comes to terms with Sara’s death long ago and it’s her understated strength of character that gets to the core of Dinah’s grief which has been stuck in the denial stage. However, in order to truly sympathize with Dinah, more scenes over the last few episodes should have focused on the mother-daughter relationship and addressing questions like how they became estranged.

Other Quick Observations:

» Pretty predictable that Moira would rat on Frank. Her blood covered hands that she tried to wipe clean is very Lady Macbeth. The Dark Archer’s brief cameo makes me anticipate a rematch with Oliver.

» Tommy said that he recognized Roy. Did this mean that Roy applied for the valet job or something else? Is Roy a well-known criminal in the glades that the Savior decided to make an example of him or just convenient story writing?

» I think Yao Fei will make it out okay. Meanwhile, the superhero team up in the making (Shado, Deathstroke, & Oliver) is gathering steam. What is Fyers up to and more importantly when is the next all island flashback episode?

» Oliver jumping from rooftop to rooftop in daylight was pretty cool and a refreshing change of pace from the night scenes.

» I found it funny when Felicity kept on explaining that the Savior was in the subway as Oliver walks away … yes we got that like a half hour ago.

» “I’ll be back in Central City in a flash”. Nice line, I didn’t even have to know The Flash resides in Central City to get the inside joke because of the well-timed delivery.

» I liked how the end of the episode tied back into the on-going arc of the undertaking involving the Glades. Also, we finally learn what the mysterious symbol on the book means.

What did you like or didn’t like about this episode? What did you think of the first meeting between Roy and Oliver? Did the Dinah Lance story arc work for you?
