The Walking Dead Season 3 Episode 10 “Home” Review

In Season 3, Episode 10 titled “Home”, Rick continues to see visions of Lori as the group prepares for the Governor’s retaliation. Meanwhile, Daryl and Merle rescue strangers from a bunch of walkers.

Visionary Leader

Rick sees Lori all dressed up in her white wedding dress. As pointed out by creator Robert Kirkman, this is Rick’s most idealized version of Lori. Visions of Lori brings him solace as he is unable to cope with the post traumatic stress and pressures of leading the group.

Rick opens up to Hershel that he realizes his visions are not really Lori. Hershel is not fazed by Rick’s confession having previously seen him talk to the dead on the phone. Will Rick get the answers he’s looking for or is this an elusive truth that is always one step out of reach?

Take Off Her Shirt Or Take Off His Hand

With Rick in “crazy town” and Daryl gone, it’s up to Glenn to take charge. Although it is good to see Glenn as a leader, most of his decisions are fueled by revenge without consideration to the safety of the group.

He’s feels at fault for what happened in Woodbury which is why he’s on a reckless warpath. He is so focused on what he thinks needs to be done, it’s difficult for Glenn to put himself in anybody else’s shoes, including Maggie’s.

Maggie is obviously traumatized by the Governor’s assault on her. The thought of being intimate causes her to push away Glenn when he reaches out for her. It may come across as an over reaction but she did almost get raped and killed.

Hershel brings up a question. Should the group should stay in the prison – their home since leaving the farm, or go back on the road. With the way the episodes ends though, it’s going to be tough escaping the prison now.

Dixon Brothers

The scenes with the Dixon Brothers were handled more effectively than the parts with Glenn and Maggie.

The chemistry between the actors makes it easy to forget they haven’t worked together much, aside from a hallucination scene in Season 2 and the fight last episode.

Daryl used to be more similar to Merle than he would like to admit: it’s revealed that at one point Daryl intended on robbing a camp.

Daryl’s time with Rick’s group changed him to act selflessly.  In this episode, he put his life in danger, saving complete strangers on the bridge without asking for anything in return. The walker’s head that got crushed by Daryl slamming the trunk door is my number 2 kill of the week.

As they walk off the bridge, the signs reads Yellow Jacket Creek which proved that Daryl was right. It’s good to see Daryl stand up to Merle and giving his loud-mouthed brother a taste of his own medicine.

A lot is explained about the brother’s relationship and their upbringing. In a heated argument, Merle tears off Daryl’s shirt revealing scars inflicted by their abusive Dad. When they were younger, Merle ran away from the abuse but left Daryl behind. Judging from Merle’s watery eyes, he’s feels guilty and won’t abandon his brother again.

Although Michonne and Glenn won’t be happy to see him, Merle knows how the Governor thinks which should prove to be very helpful.

Governor’s Web Of Lies

The Governor is a master manipulator. He will say exactly what someone needs to hear to make them do what he wants.

There’s no way the Governor would hand over his leadership to Andrea. However, it does give her a reason to stay and not go back to Rick’s group.

After her speech last episode, the Governor believes he can use Andrea to influence the residents of Woodbury in a way he is no longer able or willing to do.  He has Andrea under his thumb similar to how he convinced Milton to take a bullet for him if needed.

Telling Andrea he was no plans for retaliation .. yeah right. He may have misled Andrea, but he’s not fooling fans of the show (well I didn’t buy it, did you?)

Truck Full Of Walkers

My kill of the week goes to the Governor’s head shot on poor Axel. Just when a side character starts to get some good lines … That surprised the hell out of me. Gotta love the blood splattering all over Carol’s face.

Was Axel just making up stories to get closer to Carol or was it genuine? His body did make for an excellent bullet sponge. At least it was better than getting devoured like T-dog’s and Lori’s body. Rest in peace Mr. Mustache.

According to Kirkman, he believes the Governor’s assault was to test the prison’s defenses and as a warning to not come back to Woodbury.

The Governor doesn’t bother to take cover from the bullets. He’s smiling and enjoying every minute of it. Express delivery … a truck full of walkers on your front door!

The last action sequence was incredibly intense. The episode went from good to crazy awesome in a second.

How great was it to see Daryl’s arrow shoot through the walker’s head just as Rick was about to join Lori in the afterlife?
