Sidekick’s Naughty or Nice List for Movie News 2013

Sidekick Reviews is making a list and checking it twice. On the list are Chris Pine, Tom Hanks, JJ Abrams, Sandra Bullock, Spike Lee, Tom Hiddleston, Ron Burgundy, Benedict Cumberbatch & many more. Let’s find out who’s naughty and nice in movie news this past year!

Better watch out and continue reading after the jump.

JJ Abrams Admits Lying About Star Trek 2’s Khan Was A Mistake

The identity of Benedict Cumberbatch’s villainous character in Star Trek Into Darkness was hardly a secret to fans. But for months, JJ Abrams and the studio denied the character was indeed Khan. Playing coy with the media is one thing but Abrams was outright refuting claims despite mounting evidence to the contrary. Later in 2013, JJ Abrams admitted it would have been smarter to say upfront ‘this is who it is’.

Star Trek Into Darkness is a really good movie. I don’t believe it would have disenfranchised new fans by revealing the sequel would feature Kirk’s arch-nemesis. However, it’s very nice of him to admit his mistake. If Abrams can learn from this, hopefully any news for the upcoming Star Wars Episode VII can be taken without a grain of salt (ahh yeah). Just to be clear, I’m a huge Abrams fan ever since his TV shows Felicity and Alias. I will watch just about anything he directs as long as I’m not blinded by the lens flare. 😉

Spike Lee Does The Wrong Thing

Twitter is a great site to watch ordinary folk and celebrities make an ass of themselves! Spike Lee is no exception. The “Do The Right Thing” director has received criticism for his cold-hearted tweet in dismissing a graphic artist who claims his Oldboy poster designs were used without compensation.

According to, freelance designer Juan Luis Garcia “claims that he did work and pitched Oldboy poster concepts to a design agency, who then took his ideas and created similar work without paying or recognizing his contributions at all. Garcia then tweeted to Oldboy director Spike Lee to gain some extra attention, and the response from the filmmaker was even more disgusting than the rip-off.”

Take a look for yourself. The poster on the left is by Garcia and the one on the right is the official poster.

Know Animals Were Harmed In The Making Of This Picture

Any time an animal is harmed on screen even if it’s a digital effect it evokes a strong emotional response. Check out the comment section to my spoiler filled episode reviews for Game Of Thrones’ The Rains of Castamere and The Walking Dead’s Infected as examples. So it’s always reassuring when after the movie the statement “No Animals Were Harmed In The Making Of This Picture” appears.

But according to Hollywood Reporters’ investigation into the film industries treatment of animals, the report alleges the Bengal tiger from Life Of Pi almost drowned on set. In a leaked email, an employee of the American Humane Association, the organization responsible for issuing the “No Animals Harmed” end credit, confided: “Last week we almost f*cking killed King in the water tank”. King is the name of the tiger used when CGI was not deemed suitable. Other blockbusters such as Peter Jackson’s The Hobbit are included in the article which allegedly claim sheep and goats died from dehydration or exhaustion.

Marvel Lowballing Avengers 2 Cast

As reported earlier this year, Avengers 2 cast aren’t willing to work because of Marvel’s penny pinching ways.  Downey got paid at least $50 million for Avengers while some of the other actors received only $200,000. That’s 10 times less than what Robert Pattinson got paid for the first Twilight and he didn’t actually act in it. According to an article by Deadline, Marvel threatens to sue or recast when contracts are challenged.

Marvel has a history of recasting actors. In November, Terrence Howard revealed why Don Cheadle replaced him in the role of Lt. Col. James Rhodes (aka War Machine). “This is gonna get me in a lot of trouble, but who gives a f*ck,” Howard said. “It turns out that the person that I helped become ‘Iron Man,’ when it was time to re-up for the second one, took the money that was supposed to go to me and pushed me out.”

On the issue of Marvel keeping it cheap, here’s what Joss Whedon said: “In general terms, yes – Marvel can be very cheap, God knows. They can also be sensible and frugal. They have a very small infrastructure and they’re not heaping this money on themselves. I don’t know a producer who’s done more and is paid less than Kevin Feige.”

Avengers 2 is scheduled to begin filming early 2014 and is coming to theatres on May 1, 2015.

Are you a Pine Nut or a Cumberbitch?

Watch talk show host Graham Norton guess if fans, some of whom travelled from across the globe to meet the stars of Star Trek Into Darkness, are a self-proclaimed Chris Pine Nut or a Benedict Cumberbitch. Both Chris Pine and Benedict Cumberbatch are very sweet and gracious to their adoring lady fans which lands them on the nice list.

Tom Hanks & Sandra Bullock Play Chopsticks

If you’re feeling a bit of the Christmas blues, this video will put a smile on your face. Tom Hanks re-enacts a classic moment from his 1988 classic “Big” along with some help from actress Sandra Bullock. 2013 is a stellar year for two of the most classy and likable movie stars ever.

You Stay Classy, Ron Burgundy

Will Ferrell is going all out promoting his latest movie. He’s doing interviews in character and Ron Burgundy even wrote his own faux autobiography. Last month, Will Ferrell and the cast of Anchorman 2: The Legend Continues performed Afternoon Delight a capella for a charity that helps students with creative writing. Above is the sing-song clip from the Sydney premiere of Anchorman 2.

Paul Walker Secretly Bought $9,000 Ring for a Military Couple Who Couldn’t Afford It

The late Paul Walker was a generous Hollywood star. After the Fast and Furious actor’s tragic death, a couple came forth with an incredible story. Back in 2004, Kyle Upham and his fiancée were shopping for an engagement ring when a fellow shopper they recognized was Walker started to help them. The couple left the store without the $9000 ring. But apparently, Walker found out Upham was about to be deployed to Iraq so he secretly arranged to buy the ring for the couple. Recently, the jewellery story clerk revealed the story which confirmed the couple’s hunch that Walker was the donator.

Tom Hiddleston as LOKI at Comic-Con 2013

For many fans the announcement of Superman Vs Batman stole the thunder at this year’s San Diego comic con. But my personal highlight is as the Marvel conference gets started, the lights go out and the Asgardian God of Mischief makes a surprise take over. Tom Hiddleston oozes charisma and he clearly loves performing on the theatrical stage.

Zachary Quinto Vs Leonard Nimoy: The Challenge

This is an amusing bonus video featuring the battle of wit and speed between the two Spocks. Enjoy!

Who do you think deserves a lump of coal this year? And who is receiving all your warm wishes and holiday cheer?

Thank you very much for reading! Happy Holidays and Happy New Year to you!

  1. Pine and Cumberbatch were adorable on Graham Norton! And I’m glad you like Abrams, too. I even like the lens flares. 😀

  2. Nice list 😀 ….haha puns!

  3. Good wrap-up of 2013. I loved Star Trek Into Darkness (I think it might even be my favorite movie of the year), but I agree they shouldn’t have tried so hard to keep Khan a secret. And I adore both Chris Pine and Benedict Cumberbatch, and I’ll watch them in any movie. 🙂

  4. Great video choices yo, I loved Loki at Comic-Con that was incredible. Also that video with Nimoy and Quinto was simply amazing.

  5. That Tom Hanks and Sandra Bullock chopsticks vid did put a smile on my face 🙂

  6. JJ Abrams and Spike Lee definitely deserve to be on the naughty list. Abrams should be ashamed of how badly STID turned out. Perhaps not ashamed of the film itself (even though it was awful), but how he blatantly lied to the public about Khan not being in it. Spike Lee certainly didn’t have anything to do with the poster design (directors usually have little to do with marketing), but he didn’t have to bust out the attitude. He should have claimed ignorance, and people would have given him a pass. But the way he handled it, just like how he handles pretty much everything, confirms he’s a giant dick.

I like this idea for a naught/nice post. Great job.

    • Glad you liked the naughty and nice post. It was hard to come up with a naughty list but I tried to have fun with it. Some of these celebrities really need to hire PR to screen their tweets haha. Great to hear from you and totally like the way you never hold back your punches.

  7. A brilliant post! Some epic moments here. Merry Christmas!

  8. I’m not a Star Trek nor an Abrams fan, but I really enjoyed watching Into Darkness. It was that good I guess! 🙂

  9. Some favs here! Happy Merry to you:)

  10. Quinto and Nimoy commerical was the funniest thing I’ve seen in a long time. Thanks! 🙂

  11. oh my God, Hiddles at Comic Con. The way he can make the crowd silent with a gesture. That’s the definition of charisma. And the way he kept breaking the character and smile was adorable!

  12. This is an awesome post SKR…I think you should do this monthly 😉
I didn’t know everything on your wrong list…nice to know that.

The nice list, I know some of them….and I am a certified Cumberbabe 😉

  13. Cumberbabe sounds so much better than the other word! This was an amazing year for Cumberbabes! He was in so many movies. Glad you liked it, I might do a monthly movie news wrap. 🙂

  14. Fun stuff here!

Oy, that’s terrible about those naughty people, esp. that last one w/ Marvel. I mean it’s ridiculous the discrepancies of pay grade in the Avengers, very true what you said about R-Patz!

LOVE that Graham Norton show, those lucky fans got to meet the two guys as they try to one-up each other, in a fun way of course.

Tom Hiddleston is so darn charismatic, he’s always so charming and entertaining. LOVE him!

Happy new year to you, thank you for this!

    • Glad the list is fun, that was my goal. 🙂 Oh Marvel … I just hope they don’t recast any more actors since I’ve grown very attached to them in their super hero roles!

Hiddleston is a scene stealer, he’s totally charismatic!

Happy new year to you too!

  15. Any word on Spider-Man in the Avengers 2? I loved the first one but with Spider-Man missing, it made the film a tad incomplete. Then again, I’m the guy who played Marvel Avengers for PS2 and PSP choosing Spider-Man as the leader of my four-man team. So, my request may be moot!

    • That would be so sweet to see Spidey show up in Avengers 2. Sony has big plans for Spider-man franchise and spin-offs so they won’t be returning the movie rights to Marvel. But we still have video games and comics books to get our Spidey & Avengers fix. 🙂

  16. Fun list…JJ Abrams loves to play the marketing game doesn’t he.

    • He sure does, it’ll be interesting to see how he hypes Star Wars. Thanks for commenting.

      • I do fear the marketing campaign will be jaw-dropping but the films lacking. I say let Abrams market/produce the films but give the directing duties to someone more capable – a bit like Lucas did with Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi.

…who should direct Star Wars instead of Abrams – not sure: maybe Peter Jackson, del Toro or…Steven Spielberg!!!

        • The original Star Wars trilogy is beloved by so many, it’s interesting to see the wide range of reaction to JJ taking over the franchise. Although I liked Star Trek, it wasn’t until my second viewing until I fully appreciated the reboot by Abrams. Super 8 is a dud and MI3 okay. Not all of his work is great but I still have high hopes and want to see what Abrams comes up with. Ooh Spielberg would be amazing.
