Game Of Thrones Season 5 Trailer: What You Might Have Missed

Melisandre Game of Thrones Season 5

A Sneak Preview of Game Of Thrones Season 5

The trailer for Season 5 of Game Of Thrones is filled to the brim with tantalizing snapshots, intriguing sound bites and all around awesomeness. Because there’s quite a bit of information to take in and make sense of, let’s take a closer look at what might be going on in Season 5.

This post contains spoilers for previous seasons and speculation & possible spoilers for Season 5 based on the trailer and promotional photos. No Book Spoilers.

• Cersei’s Flashback

With each new season the political landscape in King’s Landing continues to shift. Several of the major power players including Varys, Littlefinger and Tyrion left King’s Landing last season. The most powerful figure, Tywin, is dead and as seen in the trailer Jamie will travel to Dorne. This will leave Cersei and Margaery to go head to head in their machinations. As a pawn in their power struggle will be the naive and impressionable King Tommen. For poor Tommen’s sake, let’s hope Margaery’s third attempt at marriage will last longer than her previous two.

It’s been confirmed that Season 5 will feature the first-ever flashback.  The general purpose of a flashback is to give background information that’ll shed light on present day conflicts or give insight on a character’s motivation. If the rumours are true, the above photo of a girl drawing blood from her thumb is young Cersei.

• The Sand Snakes Send Their Regards

Season V is billed as the season of vengeance and House Martell has every reason to be vindictive. Afterall, Prince Oberyn Martell aka “The Red Viper” got obliterated by Cersei’s champion, the Mountain, whom also murdered Elia Martell many years ago. The implication of receiving a statue of a viper poised to strike will not be lost on Cersei and Jamie.  It’s very likely that the necklace in the serpent’s fang belongs to their daughter Myrcella who’s been the ward of the Martell’s since Season 2.

• Arya in the House of Black and White

The coin that Jaqen H’ghar, the shape shifting faceless man, gave Arya has led her to Bravos or more specifically the House of Black & White.  Throughout her journey Arya has taken on the guise of Arry the boy and even Tywin’s low-born cup-bearer. Now in the below photo, it appears she’s dressed in an apprentice’s garment. By the way she is holding Needle it’s not to practice her water dancing.

 Melisandre Gets Naked … Again

Okay you probably didn’t miss the part in the trailer when Melisandre begins to disrobe. As mysterious as Melisandre is, she’s predictable when it comes to two things: burning people alive at the stake and nothing good will come of her getting naked. Whether she’s giving birth to a shadow creature or putting leeches on Gendry’s man parts, the ultimate goal of her most powerful spells has been to get rid of poser kings. Is she up to her old tricks? Unless Mance Rayder, the King Beyond The Wall, bends the knee to Stannis, it’s possible he could very well meet a fiery fate.

• The Fighting Pits Of Meereen

If Varys can be trusted, he has previously claimed that his actions has been for the good of the realm. However Varys hasn’t tipped his hand on his ultimate end game until now. He tells Tyrion that he plans on bringing a rightful ruler to the Iron Throne.

Things brings us to Dany. To appease her people she reopens the gladiatorial fighting pits, even though she was against that last season. But the toppled Harpy statue atop the pyramid means that there will be a full on revolt.

Last but not least, Drogon is back! Unlike the two dragons that Dany chained in the catacombs in the Season 4 finale, Drogon has been on the loose. More importantly, Drogon hasn’t been confined in a small space and has been free to eat whatever he wants which means he’s been growing way, way bigger than his siblings.

Season 5 will premiere on April 12th on HBO. Until then, here are some Game Of Thrones Articles you might have missed: House Stark’s Ten Biggest Mistakes and King Joffrey’s Top Ten Worst Moments.

  1. So excited for season five, and particularly for Cersei’s potential flashback! I really loved Cersei’s chapters and am so looking forward to seeing more of her this year.

  2. I can’t wait! It wouldn’t be the same without Melisandre getting naked. I also love the huge army it shows in the trailer!

  3. Trailer was rad. Dorne looks so beautiful. I’ve been excited to see it in the show since reading the books and based on the trailer it looks great. I’m curious how those segments will work as it seems like it has the most changes from the books.

I’m most excited to see that one part in Daznak’s Pit!

As cool as the trailer is, it is a bit of a bummer that of all the things to use a flashback on, they are doing that Cersei scene.

Great write-up. Can’t wait for the season to start!

    • I’m also very curious and excited about how the Dorne scenes will play out since they are deviating from the books. I also think that because fans loved The Red Viper, the interest level to meet his family is pretty high.

Oh man, that part in the Pit will be epic!

I see what you mean. I would personally love a whole prequel series on characters like Ned, his sister etc.

Great to see a trailer packed with so much stuff, can’t wait for the season to start too. Thank you!

  4. What an awesome round up. I am definitely the most interested in Jon Snow and what is going on at the wall,

  5. I really liked the trailer, the way it was edited and the music but the content is a bit underwhelming. I realize it’s because this time they really cannot show the glimpses of the big events because they would in itself be spoilers but I hope the next trailers will have a bit more meat in them

    • The cover of David Bowie’s Heroes fit in well and the flow of the trailer from scene to scene transitioned nicely. I didn’t mind that the trailer avoided big events to limit spoilers, but I can understand fans of the show wanting something more to sink their teeth in to. 🙂 I’m pretty sure the next trailers will reveal a bit more on upcoming events.
