Michael Fassbender is Destined for Great Things in “Assassin’s Creed” Movie

Assassin’s Creed starring Michael Fassbender and Marion Cotillard is the first of eight film adaptations of video games from Ubisoft Movie Studios.

The new studio’s approach to producing video game movies is to prioritize what is the best artistic angle to serve the franchise that is being adapted. The upcoming movie lineup includes Tom Clancy’s The Division starring Jake Gyllenhaal and Tom Clancy’s Splinter Cell with Tom Hardy attached to the lead role.

While many of Ubisoft’s movies in development do not have a theatrical release date at this time, Assassin’s Creed opens on December 21.

Reuniting with both actors Fassbender and Cotillard is Macbeth director Justin Kurzel.

Kurzel describes Assassin’s Creed main themes as “about tribe, about belonging to something. And definitely this story is an origin story about a man who discovers that he’s an assassin and that he is not alone, and that in him he has a blood that runs very, very deep. So I think those themes and ideas are really kind of fascinating—the idea that you are made up of people that come before you and you somehow have some kind of conscious dialogue with your genetics.”

Here’s a quick synopsis:

Career criminal Callum Lynch is rescued from his own execution by Abstergo Industries, the modern-day incarnation of the Templar Order. He is forced to participate in the Animus Project and relive the memories of his ancestor Aguilar de Nerha, an Assassin in the time of the Spanish Inquisition. As Lynch continues to experience Aguilar’s memories, he begins to gain the knowledge and skills necessary to confront the Templars—age-old enemies of the Assassins—in the present day.

The latest TV spot highlights Assassin’s Creed intriguing blend of futuristic technology and action-adventure in a historic setting.

Costarring Jeremy Irons, Essie Davis and Brendan Gleeson, Assassin’s Creed shares a release date with Chris Pratt’s and Jennifer Lawrence’s Passengers.

  1. I couldn’t imagine myself going to see this, but with such a great cast, I’m intrigued! Nice review.

  2. I’m a huge fan of the Assassins Creed games, so I’m really excited to see this. I’m expecting it to not be great, but I can always hope!

    • Hi Allie! It’s a great concept for a game and film, I only played a bit of the second one. Yeah, I’m gonna wait for good reviews first before deciding if it’s worth watching in theatres.

  3. Although I’m not familiar with the Assassin’s Creed games, I am a huge fan of Michael Fassbender’s, so this is on my watch list! Video games have had a spotty track record at the box office, but I hope this one succeeds. The concept seems really cool.

  4. Hi Ashley! It’s really cool that they got Michael Fassbender for this role. Yeah, I hear you about video games movies, I haven’t watched Warcraft yet. If Assassin’s Creed gets positive reviews it could be a good sign for the other video games coming from Ubisoft.
