Superhero movies continue to dominate. Each of this year’s big six live-action superhero movies are in the top ten at the box office for 2017. DC served up a double volley with the first Wonder Woman film and the team-up Justice League. The best stand-alone Wolverine movie marks the end of Hugh Jackman’s era as Logan. Marvel Studios is still going strong adding Spider-Man: Homecoming into their shared universe. Here’s a personal take on how the biggest superheroes movies of 2017 stacked up. Honorable Mention: Power Rangers
A surprisingly enjoyable blockbuster, Power Rangers gets a lot of things right. Looking forward to see where this franchise will go next.
Pros: – Misfit teenagers discovering powers is fun
– Good characters and interactions
– Good budget for a reboot
Cons: – Villain is a bit too campy
– If there was more time, additional team building scenes would be enjoyable
6. Justice League
A middling superhero movie in 2017 doesn’t cut it, in fact it places Justice League as this year’s weakest offering in this popular genre.
Pros: – This version of Superman is fun
– Good costumes
– Light banter and less serious tone
Cons: – CGI could use a lot more work
– Villain could use a lot more work
– Needs a compelling, meaningful story
5. Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2
The A-holes are all back together. The not-so secret to Guardians’ success is it’s a rollicking space adventure with a lot of infectious fun.
Pros: – Good to get back to the characters and world
– Continues to develop the family theme
– Kurt Russell’s performance is very good
Cons: – The humor is hit and miss
– The emotional ending didn’t work for everyone
4. Spider-Man: Homecoming
Marvel’s biggest superhero comes home. Homecoming is a confident and fun reboot that is integrated into the MCU.
Pros: – Tom Holland’s era should last a long time
– Michael Keaton is a natural fit for Vulture
– A great reveal which plays out with humor and suspense
Cons: – Flash Thompson casting didn’t fit
– Final showdown could have been more satisfying
Logan is a great send-off to Hugh Jackman’s Wolverine. What makes this film standout is exploring Logan at his most authentic self in a grounded, ultra-violent manner.
Pros: – A blend of genres unlike a typical superhero film
– Logan’s ferociousness and violence is fully unleashed
– Thoughtful themes incorporated into the story
Cons: – Lack of a strong villain presence
2. Wonder Woman
Wonder Woman hits enough of the right notes moviegoers enjoy and expect: A hero you can root for and an entertaining mix of dramatic stakes, good action and some fun humor.
Pros: – A standalone origin story set in the past
– Memorable personal moments and action scenes
– Hero’s journey is well told
Cons: -Slight overuse of slow-mo and final fight needed improvement
1. Thor: Ragnarok
Thor: Ragnarok is a breath of fresh air for MCU. Fans are going to be referencing many memorable moments for years to come. Thor: Ragnarok is a humorous and action-packed superhero blockbuster done right.
Pros: – Good use of the main characters
– Quippy banter and vibrant visual storytelling
– Thor and Hulk is a great pairing
Cons: – Thor’s personal arc to becoming king could have been stronger
