Guardians Of The Galaxy: Everything You Need To Know About The Movie

Guardians_of_the_Galaxy_logo

The tenth movie in Marvel’s Cinematic Universe comes to theatres this summer. If you aren’t familiar with Guardians Of The Galaxy, don’t sweat it, neither are many die-hard comic book readers. Marvel guru Stan Lee recently confessed why he won’t be making a cameo in this movie, “No, I’m afraid not, that’s the one group I didn’t create. I didn’t write Guardians of the Galaxy. I’m not even sure who they all are. I can’t wait to see the movie.”

Who are the Guardians Of The Galaxy? What is the movie about and why should Marvel fans care? These are some questions Marvel and Disney need to address in their marketing campaign to get people in the theatres for the all-important opening weekend. Guardians of the Galaxy could be a huge summer blockbuster or maybe it’ll be lucky to barely break even on its sizeable budget. One things for sure, Guardians needs more awareness to get general movie-goers excited.

You’re Next: Horror Movie Review

You’re Next (2011; U.S. release date 2013)
Director: Adam Wingard
Starring: Sharni Vinson, Joe Swanberg and AJ Bowmen

Slicing and dicing just doesn’t cut it anymore. Straight-up slasher flicks are nowhere as popular as they once were. Most of the popular horror movies I’ve come across lately involve the supernatural, a science fiction twist, monsters, grisly torture contraptions, found footage, or Kristen Stewart. That last one is a horror for very different reasons.

After too many sequels and remakes, slashers films have become stale, predictable and cliché ridden. It’s easy to understand why the average movie fan has outgrown the basic plot of a masked man on a killing spree. In several ways, You’re Next is a tip of the hat to a subgenre of slasher films: the horror home invasion movie. But can You’re Next breathe new life into a dying subgenre of film?

To The Wonder (2012) Movie Review

To The Wonder (2012)
Director: Terrence Malick
Starring: Ben Affleck, Olga Kurylenko, Javier Bardem and Rachel McAdams

The process of financing and marketing a major motion picture often requires the attachment of a bankable high-profile actor. In the case of Terrence Malick’s Tree Of Life, getting Brad Pitt as the lead actor put the film on the radar of mainstream moviegoers. Whether big stars produce big office results is another story altogether; it certainly wasn’t the case with The Rum Diaries starring Johnny Depp.

I tend to follow the films of directors I admire more so than big name actors. Of the few films I’ve seen directed by Malick, I regard them as challenging and evocative works of art. Tree of Life is a movie that’s off the beaten path for me but I deeply connected with it. For these reasons, I’m curious if Malick’s follow up film To The Wonder would be another hidden gem.

Sizzling Hot! The Women of Spartacus

Courtesy Maxim

On a show that is known for ultra-violent gladiator battles, the women of Spartacus television series do not take a backseat to their male counterparts. Set in approximately 72 – 71 BC, women, like the men, are unhindered by Christian puritanical values and will scheme, betray, maim, slaughter, seduce or all of the above in their pursuit of power, wealth, societal status, freedom, love and vengeance. Unlike passive female characters on other television series, the women of Spartacus are the living embodiment of deception, sexual depravity, courage and tenacity.

For those that have never watched Spartacus, the character descriptions below, some of which intentionally sound like cheesy personal ads, are light on major spoilers, if any at all. However, the Best Kills section will contain spoilers but can only be viewed by hovering over it with your mouse. Caution: Some images may be too hot and provocative for you. Can you handle the hotness of Spartacus’ women? Find out below.

The Hunger Games: Movie Review

The Hunger Games: Movie/DVD Review (contains spoilers)

Directed by Gary Ross (Pleasantville, Seabiscuit), The Hunger Games is the first of not three but four movies to be based on the best-selling book trilogy by author Suzanne Collins. Set in the fictional nation of Panem, which once was North America, one teenage boy and one girl from each of the 12 districts are chosen to fight to the death in a public arena until there is a lone victor. Rather than dwelling on the inevitable blood and massacre, The Hunger Games is a young heroine’s journey of exploring her identity, humanity, and will to survive in an unjust fascist world.
